By having a solid roof, you are assured that your home is safer from the ravages of the elements. When there's a problem, however, your roof can cause a great deal of damage. You can save yourself a lot of trouble by learning how to care for your roof. Keep the tips in mind so you can prepare yourself.

While leaks sometimes do come from problems with your shingles, you should also check the foundation of the roof. If you notice dry root on the sides, then water has a chance to enter. Go over each and every potential entry point, especially rotting wood, to make sure the issue has been resolved completely.

When meeting with a professional roofer, ask to see a copy of their liability insurance. Any trustworthy roofer should have copies readily available. If they have a hard time providing you with their papers, they're probably not someone you want to work with. When you're trusting someone with your roof, you want all your bases covered.

Do not ask your roofer to work on your gutters. This is not their area of expertise and they are likely to mess up. Therefore, simply focus on having them do your roof, and if your gutters need to be replaced as a result, find someone to do that job that specializes in it.

While you should leave heavy duty work up to professionals, there's lots of preventative maintenance you can do to keep your roof in great shape. Keep an eye out for shingles that need to be repaired or replaced, and make sure your flashing and underlining are in good condition. With a little effort, you can avoid big repair jobs altogether.

When a storm blows through your area, beware of roofers who knock on your door. They often follow a storm and offer their services to everyone on the block, then they put up a cheap, inadequate roof while taking all the money your insurer will offer on your claim, ripping you off.

Avoid ice build-up on your roof in the winter time. This potentially devastating situation occurs when snow begins to melt close to the interior lining of your home, then freezes, creating a seal. That ice can remain for a long period of time with low temperatures and create leaks and warping. Proper ventilation and insulation should remedy the problem.

Always check the credentials of the roofing contractors you are considering for work on your home. The need for licensing is nearly universal. Ensure that all documentation is present and in date. They should also have liability insurance and a workers' compensation certificate.

If you are getting bids from a few different roofers, have each of them give you a list of how much the materials are and what the cost of labor is. You want to know exactly what everything is costing you, as it will allow you to compare different people more effectively.
